NEW GROUP COMMITTED TO DEFEND PRIVACY AND FREEDOM2.31.48pm GMT Tue 4th Mar 2008 Local people are starting a Scarborough branch of the national No2ID campaign. NO2ID is a non-partisan campaign opposing the Government's planned ID card and National Identity Register. The first planning meeting of NO2ID Scarborough will be held on on Thursday 13 March at 7.30 pm at Sigma, under The Cask Inn on Cambridge Terrace. The main purpose of this meeting is to introduce themselves and decide what they can best do to publicise the campaign and win the argument. All who are supportive of the N02ID campaign are welcome. Scarborough NO2ID co-ordinator Madeleine Parkyn says: "More and more people are waking up to the threat to liberty and privacy posed by the introduction of ID cards and the rapid growth of the database state. A recent YouGov poll discovered that more people are now opposed to the introduction of a national identity scheme than support it. The aim of the Scarborough NO2ID group is to provide a support and information network for people in our area who want to oppose intrusive surveillance on our lives." Members of the group already intend to distribute information, hold public meetings, run an email list and show a screening of the critically acclaimed film Taking Liberties - about the erosion of our fundamental civil liberties. To find out more about joining the local group, email scarborough@no2id.net or phone 01723 37 55 33. To find out more about the national NO2ID campaign, visit: www.NO2ID.net
