Labour Councillor Defects to Lib Dem Group5.34.50pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 3rd Aug 2006
Brian Simpson, Councillor for Eastfield on both the Scarborough Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council has left the Labour Party and defected to the Liberal Democrats. Mr Simpson, 36, a hardworking ward councillor and key member of the Eastfield Parish Council has cited his disillusionment with the Labour Government in areas of education, health, pensions and taxation as his reasons for leaving the party. His commitment to community based politics and his desire to tackle the problems faced by the residents of Eastfield, the largest Council Estate in North Yorkshire led to his decision to join the Liberal Democrats. Brian was welcomed to the Lib Dem group on the Borough Council by fellow Eastfield Councillor and group leader, Brian O'Flynn.
