Tania Exley-Moore Speaks at Annual Debate12.31.28pm GMT Sun 12th Mar 2006 Local Lib Dem Tania Exley-Moore who recently stood as the Parliamentary Candidate for Scarborough and Whitby spoke at Thursday's Forty Club Annual Debate. The motion proposed by MP Robert Goodwill was that "The Council Tax should be abolished and replaced with a fairer system". Tania seconded the motion and whilst Mr Goodwill explored alternatives such as a Local Sales Tax, Tania outlined Lib Dem proposals for a Local Income Tax, based on the ability to pay. The motion was opposed by 40 Club member Mark Vesey who had to stand in when no member of the local Labour Party would come forward and defend the current system. His seconder was John Moore, a civil servant from County Hall. Some 30 members of the public debated from the floor offering interesting and wide ranging suggestions for changes to the current system. But there was an overwhelming sense of anger at the unfairness in the current system and the motion was passed with a clear majority. Most people attending the debate recognised that the Lib Dems were the only party with policies in place to replace the current Council Tax system and there was clear support for a new system based on the ability to pay.
