New Leader of Lib Dems at County Hall, Geoff Webber
Liberal Democrats at County Hall have elected County Councillor Geoff Webber as their new leader. He takes over from County Councillor Bill Hoult, who has led the 11-strong group since 2006. However, Bill is soon to become Mayor of Harrogate, and wishes to concentrate on that role.
Geoff Webber, who represents Harrogate Bilton & Nidd Gorge, said
"Bill has been an excellent leader, and a credit to the council and the party. He has been on the ball at all times in holding the Council's Conservative administration to account on behalf of North Yorkshire residents. But at the same time he has always shown respect for our political opponents and has never allowed things to get personal. I hope to carry on the superb work he has done."
Councillor Bill Hoult, who represents Knaresborough, said:
"As Mayor of Harrogate I will have over 500 events to attend in the next year. I have therefore decided to step down as Leader at County Hall, as it would be impossible to do both jobs well. I would like to thank all the Lib Dem County Councillors, past and present, for their help and support over the years.
Bill went on:
"I have enjoyed my time leading the group. We have been the only real opposition at County Hall, and I am particularly pleased to have led the fight against excessive Tory Council Tax rises."
