Berwick MP, Alan Beith
Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick, Sir Alan Beith, has urged the Government to upgrade the East Coast mainline following the Government's decision not to include the region in the proposed high speed rail network.
Plans for the new network will see work start on a link between London and Birmingham in 2017. Afterwards the line will be extended north with one route going to Scotland via the North West and another route reaching as far as Leeds.
"I support high speed rail," said Sir Alan, "but my worry is that the failure to bring it direct to the North East from the beginning might dis-encourage investment in our region.
"Therefore it is vital that long before the high speed link to Birmingham is built the East Coast mainline should be improved so that it can take faster trains and more of them."
