Lib Dem MEPs Propose Ban on Patio Heaters

Lib Dem MEPs in the European Parliament have voted resoundingly on a proposed ban on the sale of Patio Heaters. In a recent European Parliamentary Report on Energy Efficiency, led by Vice President Diana Wallis, scientists were able to confirm the negative impact made by carbon emitting patio heaters upon the environment.

The report, which was positively received by members of the European Parliament proposed a Europe wide ban on the sale of new patio heaters. Diana Wallis pointed out that "any 'ban' on patio heaters would simply mean that they could no longer be sold in the EU. A ban would not mean that the use of existing patio heaters would be forbidden. Fears that pubs which have recently invested in patio heaters would lose out are therefore groundless"

Diana, Lib Dem MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber which covers Scarborough and Whitby, recently publicised across the region the findings of the Energy Saving Trust's research into patio heaters. They found that at 18%, Yorkshire and the Humber was the region with the highest proportion of patio heaters per household.
