Liberal Democrats passed a motion at last week's conference calling for Tory bus deregulation to be reversed, with local authorities being given much more control over pricing and planning of services.
This would lead to big changes to the way British transport is managed and operated, meaning more services and cheaper fares leading to increased mobility for the poorest.
Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, Alistair Carmichael MP said:
"The Tories ran down public transport through under funding and botched privatisation. Labour have had nine years to put these problems right, but have done little.
"The Liberal Democrats want to give more power to local councils, which would lead to see more investment and cheaper fares.
"In London, where the Mayor already has similar powers, we have seen big rises in passenger numbers.
"The poor, who depend on public transport the most, are being badly let down."
