Conservatives on North Yorkshire County Council have conceded that their consultation about plans for the future of Special Needs Education has been flawed.
A controversial consultation has been carried out that aims to provide education for more children with special needs in mainstream schooling rather than in special schools as at present.
There are clear divisions among professionals such as school headteachers, staff and the educationalists at County Hall about the changes. Liberal Democrats have been successful in calling for more time to be given for the consultations. At the meeting of the Richmondshire Area Committee on 4 September, Richmond Lib Dem Councillor Stuart Parsons raised the issue.
Cllr Stuart Parsons (Richmond) comments:
"The whole consultation was rushed, and did not offer alternatives to parents. The Tories accept this, yet are pushing ahead with it anyway."
"The Liberal Democrats have yet to be convinced that this is not just another cost cutting exercise."
