More than 200 local people turned out on Thursday night for a public meeting to address the cutting of services at Scarborough Hospital.
North Yorkshire County Council Health Scrutiny Committee convened a public meeting at the Royal Hotel at the request of the Patient and Public Forum. Members of the Hospital Trust and the PCT were there but the Strategic Health Authority were conspicuous in their absence.
Presentations were made by Michael Whitworth of the PCT and Alison Guy of the Hospital Trust explaining why cuts amounting to 7 million pounds had to be made in the next year if we were to prevent Scarborough Hospital from becoming a community hospital with a drastic reduction in services.
Councillor John Blackie Chair of the Health Scrutiny Committee agreed a plan of action which involved quizzing the SHA about their role in the deficit and their decision to give Scarborough only 1 year to pay the money back when some other hospitals in the region had been given 3 years. He also agreed to raise the issue of the lack of parity between hospitals in their per capita funding.
