Since the autumn of 2005 the British National Party have developed a presence in Scarborough. There is one local activist, but most of their members travel from West Yorkshire, usually on Saturdays, to man a stall in the central area of the pedestrian precinct issuing recruiting leaflets and selling the party newspaper 'Voice of FREEDOM'. The stall is draped with the Union Jack, but does not give a clear indication that its materials are those of the BNP.
Their aim is to gain political support from the public by targetting the disaffected, disenchanted and disgruntled elector. Unfortunately, the ethnic minority is promoted to the less discerning and knowledgeable persons of society as being the cause of all our ills.
An Anti-Fascist Coalition has been formed in Scarborough supported by the national United Against Fascism group, which comprises local people of differing persuasions including Lib Dems. Members of the local group cover the age spectrum and it is gratifying that several young people, not yet of voting age, feel strongly enough to join in opposing the BNP's racist propaganda.
Unfortunately, the other major political parties have not demonstrated any opposition to the BNP. It is by this type of apathy that the BNP gains ground in order to win council seats. It is our belief they will contest forthcoming local elections.
In addition to demonstrating opposition to the BNP on Saturday mornings, the anti-fascist group also meets weekly on Tuesday evenings to leaflet homes in Scarborough, concentrating on areas the BNP have leafleted. This is not an onerous task, not more than 30 minutes work and anyone willing to assist in this way would be most welcome. If you contact Jim Martin, email jim@newby1.freeserve.co.uk , then he will be able to inform you of the forthcoming week's meeting place, usually a public house, where members gather from 7 pm onwards.
Additionally, if you have received a BNP leaflet through your door, or are aware of areas that have been leafleted, then Jim will appreciate being given that knowledge.
